80% of EHR data is unstructured. Billions of data points, potentially life-saving insights, are locked in formats we can't easily search, analyze, or share.

Healthcare Innovator,

Every year, the U.S. healthcare system generates over 1.2 billion clinical documents, and that number is growing by nearly 48% annually. This explosion of data could fuel better care, smarter decisions, and faster research. We've spent the last decade digitizing health records.

But 80% of EHR data is unstructured. Free-text notes, discharge summaries, radiology reports, referrals, etc. Most of it is barely used. Billions of data points, potentially life-saving insights, are locked in formats we can't easily search, analyze, or share.

What Are We Missing?

Unstructured clinical notes often contain:

  • Contextual clues about how a patient felt during a visit
  • Detailed family history or previous diagnoses
  • Behavioral, social, or environmental risk factors

These insights are rarely captured in structured fields but can be critical for accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and personalized care. Yet, because they aren't searchable or interoperable, this data often goes unused in real-world clinical decision-making.

The Expensive Consequences

When providers don't have access to complete patient histories, the results are: Misdiagnoses, Redundant tests and treatments, Lower-quality care at a higher cost.

To deliver truly data-driven care, we must use innovations in AI and natural language processing (NLP) to extract, summarize, and share insights from clinical notes, without adding to clinicians' workloads!

Until next time,
